Smart Tips for Reducing Alcohol Intake and Avoiding Holiday Hangovers
Smart Tips for Reducing Alcohol Intake and Avoiding Holiday Hangovers
The holiday season is filled with celebrations, family gatherings, and plenty of delicious food. But let’s be honest, it also often comes with an excess of alcohol. Whether you’re attending a Christmas party or ringing in the New Year, it’s easy to get carried away with the festivities. While a drink or two can be part of the fun, overindulging can leave you feeling terrible the next day with a dreaded hangover. If you’ve experienced the aftereffects of drinking too much, you know that dehydration, headaches, fatigue, and nausea can quickly put a damper on your holiday cheer. However, with a few smart strategies, you can reduce your alcohol intake, stay in control, and avoid those painful hangovers altogether. Here are some tips to help you enjoy the holiday season without overdoing it on the drinks. 1. Set a Limit Before You Start Before heading out to a party or social event, it’s important to set a limit on how much you plan to drink. Establish a clear number of drinks you will have, whether it’s two, three, or four. Having a limit in mind helps keep you accountable throughout the night, preventing you from drinking more than you intended. You’re more likely to enjoy the party and the time spent with friends and family when you are in control. 2. Pace Yourself with Water A great way to avoid drinking too much alcohol too quickly is to alternate between alcoholic drinks and water. This not only helps to slow down your alcohol consumption but also keeps you hydrated throughout the night. Dehydration is one of the main causes of hangovers, so drinking water helps to balance out the dehydrating effects of alcohol. You can even add a splash of lime or lemon to your water to make it more enjoyable. 3. Eat Before and While Drinking One of the best ways to prevent a hangover is to make sure you eat before drinking and continue eating while drinking. Having a substantial meal before drinking slows the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream, reducing the risk of getting tipsy too quickly. Focus on foods that are rich in protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates, as they provide long-lasting energy. Snacks like nuts, cheese, and hummus are excellent choices to pair with your drinks. 4. Choose Lighter Drinks Not all alcoholic beverages are created equal when it comes to their effects on your body. Some drinks, like beer and sugary cocktails, can be heavier on the stomach and lead to worse hangovers. Opt for lighter options such as a glass of wine or a simple cocktail made with clear spirits like vodka, gin, or rum. These drinks tend to have fewer congeners (chemicals produced during fermentation), which are linked to more severe hangovers. 5. Know Your Limits It’s essential to know your body and understand how much alcohol you can handle. Everyone’s tolerance is different, and it’s important to listen to your body. If you start feeling tipsy, lightheaded, or dizzy, it’s a clear sign to stop drinking. Pushing yourself to drink more to keep up with others will only lead to regret the next day. Be kind to yourself, and know when enough is enough. 6. Take Breaks Between Drinks Instead of sipping on one drink after another, take short breaks in between. Give your body time to process the alcohol and evaluate how you’re feeling. Socializing doesn’t require a constant drink in hand, and by stepping away from the bar or beverage table for a few minutes, you’re giving your body time to recover. You can use this time to engage in conversation or enjoy the music and atmosphere of the party. 7. Be Careful with Champagne and Sparkling Wines Champagne and sparkling wines are often the drink of choice for celebrations, but they can hit you faster than other alcoholic beverages. The bubbles in these drinks can make alcohol absorb into your bloodstream quicker, leading to a quicker onset of inebriation. If you plan to enjoy a glass of bubbly, remember to drink it slowly and switch to water or a less effervescent drink soon after. 8. Avoid Drinking Games While drinking games can be a fun way to socialize, they can also encourage you to drink more than you would otherwise. If you’re playing a game that involves alcohol, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and forget about your personal limits. It’s best to steer clear of drinking games, or if you choose to participate, be sure to pace yourself and stick to your predetermined limit. 9. Sleep and Rest Getting enough sleep after drinking is essential for your body to recover. Alcohol disrupts your sleep patterns, which can make you feel more tired and sluggish the next day. If you’ve been drinking, try to get extra rest to help your body recover. Hydrate well before bed, and if you wake up feeling thirsty, have a glass of water by your side. The combination of sleep and hydration is key to fighting off a hangover. 10. Listen to Your Body and Respect Your Limits The holiday season is about having fun, but it’s important to listen to your body and recognize your limits. If you notice any signs of intoxication or discomfort, such as feeling lightheaded, overly warm, or nauseous, it’s time to stop drinking and focus on staying hydrated. The earlier you recognize these signals, the better your chances of avoiding a hangover. Conclusion: Enjoy the Holidays Responsibly The holidays are a time for joy, laughter, and making lasting memories. By following these smart tips for reducing alcohol intake and pacing yourself, you can enjoy all the festivities without suffering from a hangover the next day. Drink responsibly, eat well, and remember that moderation is key. If you’re struggling with alcohol intake or experiencing persistent issues related to drinking, don’t hesitate to reach out to our best general physicians for guidance. Read More
The Benefits of Staying Active During the Holidays for Your Digestion
The Benefits of Staying Active During the Holidays for Your Digestion
The holiday season is often associated with relaxation, delicious meals, and spending time with loved ones. However, it can also be a time when many people forget the importance of staying active. With all the indulgent foods and festive treats, it can be easy to forget about your health, especially your digestion. But staying active during the holidays is crucial for maintaining a healthy digestive system and ensuring that you feel your best throughout the season. In this blog, we'll explore how staying active can benefit your digestion during the holidays, why it's important, and easy ways to keep moving even during the busiest time of year. Plus, we'll talk about how to avoid common digestive issues that many people experience over the holidays. How Physical Activity Helps Your Digestion When you engage in physical activity, it encourages the smooth movement of food through your digestive system, which can prevent bloating, indigestion, and constipation. Here's how staying active can specifically help your digestion: 1. Boosts Your MetabolismPhysical activity increases your heart rate and helps your body burn calories more efficiently. This boost in metabolism means that food moves through your digestive system faster, reducing the chances of experiencing digestive discomfort. Even simple activities like walking after a meal can promote better digestion by enhancing your metabolic rate. 2. Reduces Bloating and GasOne of the common digestive complaints during the holiday season is bloating, especially after large meals. Staying active, particularly with aerobic exercises like walking or light jogging, can help your body expel excess gas and reduce bloating. It also aids in the movement of food and gas through the intestines, providing relief from uncomfortable fullness and pressure. 3. Prevents ConstipationDuring the holidays, many people find themselves consuming more processed foods, sweets, and high-fat dishes, which can lead to constipation. Physical activity stimulates the muscles in your digestive tract, helping food and waste pass through more easily. It encourages regular bowel movements and can prevent the discomfort that comes with constipation. 4. Improves Blood Flow to Your Digestive OrgansExercise promotes better circulation, which means more blood flow to your digestive organs. This helps them function more efficiently. Enhanced circulation also supports nutrient absorption and helps in the removal of toxins from your body. So, staying active is not only good for digestion but also supports overall health. 5. Helps You Manage Holiday StressThe holidays can be stressful for many reasons—family gatherings, shopping, cooking, and planning. Stress can negatively impact your digestive system, leading to issues like acid reflux, heartburn, and poor digestion. Regular exercise is a great way to reduce stress and lower cortisol levels, allowing your body to digest food more efficiently. Easy Ways to Stay Active During the Holidays Even though the holiday season can be busy, there are plenty of simple ways to stay active without needing a gym or special equipment. Here are some easy activities to incorporate into your day: 1. Take a Post-Meal WalkAfter enjoying a holiday meal, take a short 10-20 minute walk. Walking helps your body digest food more effectively and can alleviate any bloating or discomfort you may experience. It’s also a great way to get some fresh air and unwind after spending time around the dinner table. 2. Dance to Your Favorite Holiday TunesWhat better way to enjoy the season than by dancing? Play some holiday music and have a dance party with family and friends. Dancing is a fun way to get your body moving and support digestion, all while lifting your spirits and staying social. 3. Plan Outdoor ActivitiesIf you're in a colder climate, don't let winter stop you from staying active. Go ice skating, skiing, or even just take a walk in the snow. If you're in a warmer climate, go for a hike or a swim. Outdoor activities give you a chance to be active while enjoying the beauty of nature. 4. Stretch and Do Gentle YogaStretching or practicing gentle yoga can help with digestion and relieve stress. You can do simple yoga poses like the "cat-cow" stretch, forward bends, or twists to stimulate digestion. Even just 15-20 minutes of stretching each day can make a big difference. 5. Organize Active Holiday GamesTurn your holiday gatherings into fun, active events by organizing games like scavenger hunts, family relay races, or holiday-themed obstacle courses. These activities can get everyone moving, regardless of age, and promote healthy digestion while creating memories. Why You Should Prioritize Activity for Your Digestive Health During the holidays, it's easy to let physical activity fall by the wayside in favor of more indulgent activities. But remember, staying active during this time can help you avoid the digestive discomforts that many people experience. It also provides long-term benefits for your overall health. Regular exercise is key to maintaining a healthy weight, reducing the risk of chronic diseases, and enhancing your quality of life. The good news is that staying active doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Simple activities like walking, stretching, or dancing can make a huge difference in how you feel. So, don’t let the hustle and bustle of the season stop you from taking care of your body. Incorporate movement into your daily routine, and you’ll likely feel more energized, less stressed, and experience better digestion. Conclusion The holidays are a time to enjoy family, friends, and delicious food, but they don’t have to come at the expense of your digestive health. Staying active during the festive season can help keep your digestion in check and prevent common issues like bloating, constipation, and indigestion. By incorporating simple activities into your day, such as walking, dancing, or stretching, you can keep your digestive system running smoothly. <iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6RIKLyw5iQk" width="560" height="314" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe> Contact us today to schedule an appointment and prioritize your digestive health. If you’re struggling with constipation, you’re not alone. This blog will help you understand why constipation happens during winter and share simple tips to manage and prevent it. Why Does Constipation Increase During Winter? The colder months bring unique challenges that can contribute to constipation: Reduced Water Intake: Many people drink less water in winter because they don’t feel as thirsty as they do during summer. This can lead to dehydration, making it harder for your body to pass stools.Lack of Physical Activity: Winter often encourages a more sedentary lifestyle. People are less likely to exercise or go outdoors due to the cold, which can slow down digestion.Dietary Changes: Winter diets often include heavier, richer foods and fewer fresh fruits and vegetables, leading to reduced fiber intake.Layered Clothing: Wearing multiple layers can sometimes compress your abdomen, subtly impacting digestion over time. How to Manage Constipation in Winter The good news is that constipation can often be managed with simple lifestyle changes. Here’s what you can do: 1. Stay Hydrated Even in the colder months, your body needs enough water to stay healthy. Dehydration makes stools hard and difficult to pass. Drink at least 2-3 liters of water daily, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Warm liquids like herbal teas, soups, and broths can also help maintain hydration and stimulate digestion. Avoid too much caffeine or alcohol, as they can dehydrate your body. 2. Add Fiber to Your Diet Fiber plays a key role in maintaining healthy digestion. It adds bulk to your stool and helps it pass through your digestive tract more easily. Include fresh fruits like apples, oranges, guavas, and pears in your diet. Vegetables like carrots, beets, spinach, and cabbage are excellent fiber-rich options. Whole grains like oats, brown rice, and quinoa can also boost your fiber intake. Don’t forget nuts and seeds like flaxseeds, chia seeds, and almonds—they’re not just nutritious but also support healthy digestion. 3. Don’t Skip Physical Activity Even a moderate level of exercise can work wonders for your digestion. Movement helps your intestines work efficiently, reducing the risk of constipation. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily. It could be walking, yoga, or light stretching exercises. If the weather is too cold, consider indoor workouts or simple at-home exercises like squats and lunges. 4. Maintain a Consistent Routine Your digestive system thrives on routine. Eating meals at regular times and establishing a bathroom routine can help regulate bowel movements. Try to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the same time every day. Schedule a specific time to use the restroom, even if you don’t feel the urge initially. 5. Stay Warm The cold weather can slow down your metabolism, which may affect digestion. Keep your body warm by wearing appropriate winter clothing and using blankets at home. Warm baths and heating pads can also help relax your abdominal muscles and improve bowel movements. 6. Limit Processed Foods Processed foods like chips, fast food, and sugary snacks often lack the fiber needed for healthy digestion. Replace processed snacks with healthier options like roasted nuts, fresh fruit, or whole-grain crackers. Cook meals at home using fresh, unprocessed ingredients whenever possible. 7. Consider Natural Remedies If constipation persists, natural remedies can provide relief. Prunes: These are a natural laxative and a great source of fiber. Warm Lemon Water: Drinking a glass of warm water with lemon juice in the morning can stimulate your digestive system. Ghee and Milk: A teaspoon of ghee in warm milk before bed can ease constipation. When to See a Doctor While most cases of constipation resolve with these lifestyle changes, sometimes it may persist or worsen. It’s important to consult a doctor if: You haven’t had a bowel movement in over three days. You experience severe abdominal pain or bloating. There is blood in your stool. You feel constipated frequently, despite making changes to your diet and lifestyle. Take Action At Continental Hospitals, Hyderabad, our team of experienced gastroenterologists is here to help. Preventing Stomach Bugs During Holiday Gatherings
Preventing Stomach Bugs During Holiday Gatherings
The holiday season is a time for family, fun, and food! It's also a time when gatherings can expose us to germs, including those that cause stomach bugs. These illnesses, often referred to as "stomach flu" or gastroenteritis, can put a damper on your holiday cheer. But don’t worry! By following some simple tips, you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe from these pesky bugs. What Are Stomach Bugs? Stomach bugs are caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites that infect the stomach and intestines. Common symptoms include: Nausea and vomiting Diarrhea Stomach cramps Fever These symptoms usually last a few days but can sometimes lead to dehydration and more serious complications, especially in young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. The good news is that stomach bugs are preventable with the right precautions. 1. Wash Your Hands Often Handwashing is your first line of defense against stomach bugs. Germs spread quickly during holiday gatherings when people shake hands, hug, and share food. Make it a habit to wash your hands: Before eating or preparing food After using the restroom After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose After touching commonly shared surfaces like door handles or mobile phones Use warm water and soap, scrubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds. If soap isn’t available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. 2. Practice Safe Food Handling Holiday feasts are a highlight of the season, but foodborne illnesses can spoil the fun. Follow these food safety tips: Cook food thoroughly: Ensure meats, seafood, and eggs are cooked to their recommended temperatures. Separate raw and cooked foods: Use separate cutting boards for raw meat and vegetables. Store leftovers properly: Refrigerate leftovers within two hours to prevent bacteria from growing. Avoid cross-contamination: Wash utensils and surfaces thoroughly. Encourage everyone to use serving utensils instead of hands when taking food from shared dishes. 3. Stay Hydrated Hydration plays a key role in keeping your digestive system healthy. Drinking plenty of water can flush out toxins and support your immune system. If you’re traveling or hosting, make sure clean drinking water is readily available. Avoid sugary drinks or excessive alcohol, as these can irritate your stomach and weaken your defenses. Herbal teas, coconut water, and homemade soups are great alternatives to stay hydrated and nourished. 4. Limit Close Contact if You’re Feeling Unwell Holiday gatherings are about togetherness, but if you or someone in your family feels unwell, it’s better to stay home. Stomach bugs spread easily through close contact, contaminated surfaces, and shared food or drinks. If you’re hosting, encourage guests to let you know if they’re feeling under the weather. It’s better to reschedule a get-together than risk spreading illness to everyone. 5. Boost Your Immunity A strong immune system can help your body fight off infections. You can boost your immunity by: Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains Getting enough sleep (aim for 7-9 hours a night) Staying active with regular exercise Managing stress through relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga Taking these steps can make your body more resilient to holiday-season germs. 6. Be Cautious with Leftovers and Potluck Dishes Holiday leftovers are a treat, but they can also be a breeding ground for bacteria if not stored properly. Make sure: Leftovers are refrigerated or frozen within two hours of being served. Foods are reheated to the proper temperature before eating. Dishes brought by guests are prepared and stored safely. When in doubt, throw it out. It’s better to waste a little food than risk food poisoning. 7. Clean High-Touch Surfaces Frequently During gatherings, frequently touched surfaces like door handles, light switches, and countertops can become hotspots for germs. Regular cleaning with disinfectant wipes or sprays can reduce the spread of germs. Provide guests with easy access to tissues, trash bins, and hand sanitizers to encourage good hygiene practices. 8. Teach Kids About Hygiene Kids are often the ones most excited about holiday gatherings but can also be more susceptible to stomach bugs. Teach your children these simple habits: Wash hands frequently and thoroughly. Avoid putting hands or objects in their mouths. Use a tissue or elbow to cover their mouth when sneezing or coughing. Make hygiene fun by turning handwashing into a game or singing a song while they wash their hands. 9. Travel Smart If you’re travelling during the holidays, take extra precautions to avoid stomach bugs. Some tips include: Drink bottled or boiled water if you’re unsure about the local water quality. Avoid raw or undercooked foods, especially in unfamiliar locations. Carry hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes for cleaning surfaces during travel. Pack oral rehydration salts in case of dehydration from diarrhea or vomiting. When to See a Doctor Despite your best efforts, stomach bugs can sometimes strike. Watch for these signs that it’s time to consult a doctor: Severe dehydration (dark urine, dizziness, or dry mouth) High fever that doesn’t subside Blood in vomit or stool Symptoms lasting more than 3 days Intense abdominal pain Conclusion The holidays are a time to create cherished memories with family and friends. By taking simple precautions like practicing good hygiene, handling food safely, and boosting your immunity, you can reduce the risk of stomach bugs and enjoy the festive season worry-free.   If you or a loved one experience symptoms of a stomach bug, don’t hesitate to seek medical care. consult our best general physician at Continental Hospitals in Hyderabad. Listening to music helps improve cognitive skills
Listening to music helps improve cognitive skills
Enjoy the melody, without damaging your ears Music inspires us to do many new things in life and motivates us to overcome challenges! Music improves other senses of a human body, like gaining better vision and improved response to touch. Overall music even helps in improving the ability to paint a better and complete picture of the world at large. However, one important caution is to avoid listening to loud music to ensure it does not damage the ears. Music is present in every aspect of our life and we voluntarily or involuntarily are exposed to music daily. It is important that one is exposed to the right kind of music, which is soothing in nature in the longer term, instead of loud/brash sounds. Intermittent bouts of rap or rock-n-roll are fine, but this cannot be a mainstay in one’s life to stay healthy for a long period of time. 5-Tips: Listen to Music, Responsibly Use Music Players at 60% of the Maximum Volume Use Your Music Player For 60 Minutes A Day Only Commenting on the impact of music, Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, Consultant ENT Surgeon, Continental Hospitals said, “According to some research reports on the impact of music on education, it has been found that those students who listening to good quality music daily turn out to be good in science and mathematics, especially ‘algebra’. Music is believed to play the role of ‘social glue’, and young minds exposed to music emerge into good Samaritans as they grow.” “A 2014 research report by the Department of Education in the United States indicated that over 93% of students exposed to good music graduated with merit, and music also removes barriers between students coming from various ethnic and social backgrounds. Music also helps adolescents release or control emotions and helps them cope with difficult situations such as peer pressure, substance abuse, pressures of study and family, the dynamics of friendships and social life, and the pain of loss or abuse.” It is widely believed that rhythm abilities, such as tapping to a beat, relate with reading skills, and available initial evidence of how both abilities may rely on common underlying neural mechanisms of sound processing reiterates the importance of music in a student’s life. Not just these, teenagers associate playing music with music literacy, listening skills, motor ability, eye-hand coordination, and heightened intellectual capabilities, etc. Read More
Take care of your kidney”s health
Take care of your kidney”s health
Hyderabad, March 11 (IANS) At a time when the world is worried about coronavirus pandemic, the World Kidney Day on March 12 may pass as another annual event. But the kidney-related ailments are silent killer. The day aims to raise awareness about kidney”s importance to overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health issues worldwide. Diabetes, hypertension and obesity are some of the high-risk factors that result in kidney ailments and at times are life-threatening in nature, according to Dr Dhananjaya K.L., consultant nephrologist at Continental Hospitals, here. Undergoing tests is the only and best way to know the health of kidneys. A person with symptoms, like fatigue, high blood pressure and swelling of feet, must be careful of his kidneys; and ideally undergo regular health check-up for blood sugar, creatinine and eGFR to assess its filtration rate. India is estimated to have over 50 million people with diabetes. They are at a high risk of chronic kidney ailments. The diseases become prevalent, mainly due to poor lifestyle choices of people. Hence, it”s important to realise importance of leading an active and energised life to prevent the possibility of diabetes that could lead to kidney-related complications. “In a human body, kidneys are among the most amazing organs, which ensure wellbeing of the person. These bean-shaped organs filter 1,200 ml of blood per minute (1,700 litres a day) to keep the person healthy. It also helps remove waste and maintain a balance of chemicals and minerals in the body. It”s the process that happens in a kidney that keeps bones and teeth strong,” said Dr Dhananjaya. “While dialysis is the most common available treatment to support failing kidneys, at an advanced stage, often considered as renal failure, the only option left is to undergo a transplant,” he said. Hyderabad, considered a major healthcare destination, offers world-class kidney transplant facilities from a variety of sources, like live and cadaveric transplant. Chief Transplant Urologist and a Padmasri Awardee Sarbeswar Sahariah, who recently completed 1,000 kidney transplant surgeries, believes transplantation is a safe and best approach for individuals suffering kidney failure to lead an active life. How to stay stress-free during COVID-19 lockdown
How to stay stress-free during COVID-19 lockdown
People are suggested to main ‘social distance’ to ensure the menace of coronavirus does not find a breeding groundin the form of easy transmission between people. HYDERABAD: Unforeseen circumstances require unprecedented measures! And today India is under an unprecedented “lockdown” for 21-days to fight the global pandemic coronavirus. The lockdown would mean people would not be allowed to step out of their homes freely and will have restricted access to even everyday essential commodities. People are suggested to main ‘social distance’ to ensure the menace of coronavirus does not find a breeding groundin the form of easy transmission between people. However, for a large section of people in Indian society, thisis unacceptable! It has been noticed that people are not just worried about their economic prospects; but alsoexpressing anguish over getting restricted to their residences. Risk factors : Commenting on the risks, Dr. Jyotirmayi K, Consultant Psychiatrist, Continental Hospitals said,“Lockdown or other restrictions to daily routine will be stressful and there surely are going to be some psychological impacts on people. To avoid greater damage from happening time and again, we humans need to work harder enduring some levels of stress; and must realize that this phase too will pass soon.” To keep yourself active Remind yourself that this is a temporary phase Remember that you are a hero, and doing this for the community Stay connected with near & dear via phone, email, social media Sleep at regular routines to find each passing day relaxing Stay physically active to ensure mental agility Maintain balance by allocating specific work hours, and take regular breaks Focus on doing household chores and share burden with family members Avoid news and social media if you find it distressing “On an everyday basis, most people state they do not find time for themselves for their wellbeing. This 21-daylockdown has provided the perfect opportunity for people to spend time on themselves. Doing Yoga, speaking tofamily members, remembering past/childhood memories, speaking to old friends and reminiscing past memories couldbe a perfect way to keep oneself active and keep off from anxiety,” concluded Dr. Jyotirmayi. Another risk associated with this lockdown is the possibility of one retreating into a sedentary lifestyle, and thus adding many kilograms to the bodyweight. Commenting on this, Zeenath Fatima, Consultant Dietician, Continental Hospitals said, “During normal days manypeople tend to eat at restaurants or foods prepared not at home, doing no great favor to the human body. Put underrestrictions, now people are forced to opt for home-cooked food, which is the best and healthiest option any day.Eating green-leafy and other regular vegetables will not increase weight and during these stressful times, avoidingmeat or meat-based foods could be a better idea.” Life under a lockdown situation can negatively affect mental health, causing post-traumatic stress, confusion and even anger. But by keeping your active life going and maintaining peace in life is the best solution to ensure you wade through these difficult times with ease. Read More
What Covid? Birth date still matters
What Covid? Birth date still matters
In the times of Covid-19, what has not changed are the date and time when a newborn infant is born and doctors cannot argue about it as the pregnant woman is their major concern. These dictates are still being noted in maternity hospitals as the time and day of birthing is a priority for families and their astrological calendars. A C-Section delivery, very high in both Telugu-speaking states, is still a preference during these times too. Only corporate and big nursing homes are operational and all the load of affluent patients is on them. A senior doctor, on condition of anonymity, explained, “We have a virus around us but that does not stop people from arguing over the time and day of the delivery. These beliefs are strong and with a newborn baby, no risks in astrology are to be taken.” Doctors are keen that pregnant women are safe and for that reason normal delivery is carried out by junior doctors and senior doctors are around for supervision. Earlier, they would all crowd around the patient along with the nurses but now social distance is maintained. “It is like going back to old times where the woman has to push the baby down and from far, we would give instructions,” explained a senior doctor. C-sections are done by wearing personal protective equipment as due to Covid-19 these extra precautionary measures have to be taken during the birthing process. The biggest challenge stated doctors are the scans as they are not being carried out for all pregnant women. “We are going back to times when there were no ultrasound scans. This is because it would unnecessarily expose a pregnant woman to risk. Hence only if there is a clinical indication of anomaly in foetal movement then scans are being done. It is one in 2000 cases and, mostly, not required.” Scanning was a major part of all the three trimesters but doctors now do not want to risk their patients. The husband was a part of the birthing process but that also is not allowed as it is not safe. Similarly, those in the first and second trimesters of the pregnancy are not called to hospitals for routine checks but video conferencing is provided to clear their doubts. Tele-medicine and email are also used by patients to check on substitutes for medicines as there is a crisis of brands. Dr Sri Latha Gorthi, gynaecologist, explained, “So far we have dealt with patients who have been seeing us from first day. Hence we know their history. Yet we check with them if they have come in contact with anyone who has travelled from abroad. There has not been a single case so far but precautions of checking travel history are mandatory for us too.” Pregnant women are already immune-compromised and hence precautions in terms of social distancing, hygiene, avoiding contact with people from Covid-19-affected countries and also within the community is important, stated Dr Kavitha Naragoni, senior gynecologist and infertility specialist at Continental Hospitals.
